Strategy requires effectiveness, (getting the right job done), and tactics require efficiency, (getting the job done right).  When combined in a carefully orchestrated plan, strategy and tactics set the stage for Internet success.

Strategy presupposes a thorough understanding of your company’s products and services, the perceived and actual competition, the characteristics of the marketplace, demographics and trends in buyer behavior, customer service practices, economic conditions, demand curves and pricing models.  It requires an understanding of the sales process in all of its particulars, of solving problems and of creating solutions.  It presupposes Internet mastery, business acumen and a strong, wide-ranging technology outlook.  Finally, it requires the ability to make a reliable profit, while impacting upon the world around you in a positive way.

Powerful strategy should arise naturally from a long history in making things happen.

Tactics, on the other hand, suggest a careful and consistent implementation of an appropriate strategy, using cost-effective, up-to-the-minute tools and techniques and the exploiting of online relationships.   Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, FriendFeed, StartUpSpace and the World Business Fair are examples of tactics, not strategies.
